About Phil Wingfield

At time of writing I am a 61-year-old retired civil servant living near the end of the River Thames in Essex along with my partner and three children. I am also, amongst other things, an obsessive compulsive Indophile. My passion for India, its sights, sounds, history, culture, and everything else it would be dull to list off knows no bounds. I have been absorbing the place for a quarter of a century plus. I don't claim to be any kind of expert or authority. But I would say that I have an above average grasp of many aspects of the country and more photos and video of the place than the mind can comfortably comprehend. My slideshows are more threat than treat. 

As you can see, and may have read elsewhere, despite my personal mountain of media I also search out other people's imagery hence this endeavour. To me, these snapshots and snippets preserve people and places long gone and it's important that we have them. There have been times in my life when I have lost irreplaceable photos and those incidents will always irk. I once read a book written by a woman who travelled through India at the turn of the 20th Century. She mentions leaving a wealth of imagery in a Srinagar hotel (Kashmir) which was lost in a flood while she was climbing in the Himalayas. They weren't my photos and it was over a hundred years ago, but even so...

As Martyn, the person I bought these films from said, the sheer number of photos, videos, negatives and slides that end up in landfill or the incinerator doesn't bear thinking about. So when gems such as these films are saved, it's a win. And I'll take that win.
